Lauryn Chan Year: Second Year Major: Nutrition: Metabolism & Physiology Interests: Teaching, Art, and Tennis Why did you decide to take Asian American Studies 128AC?: Since I have gone on several mission trips to the Middle East, I was fascinated early on by its culture and religion. I wanted to concentrate on the Muslim community so that I can fully understand their way of life and learn more about their Islamic religion. I have empathy for their struggles and the hardships the community has faced within America.
Harry Fisher-Jones Year: Third Year on exchange from the Unversity of Edinbergh Major: Religious Studies Interests: Art, Fashion, Music, Superb Productions, BARE Magazine What's the most interesting thing you've learned in class so far?: I have found our discussions on the origins and persistence of Islamophobia in America extremely interesting, especially when considering the organisational structures established with the intent to manufacture and disseminate the culture of fear that surrounds the religion today.
Dimiana Georgieva Year: Third Year Major: Political Science Interests: Cooking, Soccer, and International and Comparative Politics What's the most interesting thing you've learned in this class so far?: The most interesting thing I have learned is about perceptions and the notion of the orient. Our knowledge is formed through and by an authoritative system which controls the outlets of information and production of materiality.
Kay Kim Year: Fourth Year Major: Media Studies, Asian American Studies (minor) Interests: Drawing, Reading, Internet Surfing, Circle K (service org) Why did you decide to take Asian American Studies 128AC?: I wanted to educate myself on a community that had always been in the shadows of my knowledge. More than anything, I wanted to learn more about the conditions and history of Muslim Americans so that I wouldn't remain ignorant about prominent social and political issues.
