Our Future Today
Teachings of Islam to the Younger Generation
The world is ever-changing.
The information obtained and perceptions concerning is crucial in today’s world. Mosques and Islamic centers in the United States are taking steps toward promoting Islamic education among younger generations, and the Fatimiyya Islamic Center is no exception. It works to emphasize the educational aspect by providing the community with diverse educational sources and teaching.
The Fatimiyya Islamic Center, named after the Prophet Muhammad's daughter, was established in 2000. The center was founded by a group of young Muslims and, perhaps for this reason, the center's main objective is to educate the youth. The center's primary demographic is of Afghan descent, although it is open to all religious and ethnic groups, including a considerable number of converts, The center holds classes in both Farsi and English. Imam Sayyid, who is the current Imam at the Fatimiyya Islamic Mosque, acknowledges the importance of education among the younger generations; his goal is to develop the mosque to “be focused on education, not only [act as] a place of prayer.” As a student at the University for Islamic Studies, Imam Sayyid studied Qur'anic Science and interpretation of the Holy Qur’an. Imam Sayyid and the center have a goal of teaching the younger demographic the important principles of the Islamic faith. The Fatimiyya Islamic Center is more than just a mosque – it provides a place for all Muslims to work and learn together as a community.
One of the main projects that the mosque is currently developing is the renovations of a new building that they recently purchased. The new location is on Mission Boulevard in Hayward. The mosque is expanding to accommodate the growing number of youth members; the building is a very extensive project that will provide multiple classrooms and prayer rooms for different age groups. The center is currently working on renovating the new building and is asking for donations. The mosque is very excited and we are all anticipating the opening of the new building soon.

One activity that the Fatimiyya Islamic Center offers is Qur'anic Studies on Saturdays. Here, people can study the Qur'an in a diligent and proper manner. The class is open to all age groups, though it specifically targets younger Muslims, and is led by Maulana Wahedi. Fatimiyya also offers an English program every Friday night at their location. Though it is relatively young, the program allows students to come and learn Qur’anic texts and prayers in the English language. There are about 30-40 students who dedicate their Friday nights to learning more about the teachings of Islam. The English program provides a thorough education without the hindrances of language or accessibility.
The Fatimiyya Islamic Center is dedicated to education, which is very important in our world today. It is inspiring to see the dedication and effort that this mosque and the leaders within the mosque are prescribing by means of education. The mosque encourages people from different backgrounds to visit and learn about Islam on an introductory level and beyond. This project was very fascinating for all of us, in part due to being able to apply what we learned in class to the actual Bay Area Muslim communities.
